We are all susceptible to making high-sounding moral statements when our audience is thought to be in agreement with us. The truth is that immoral policy and practice has often gone unrecognised by the majority for hundreds of years. Before the self-righteous get too enthusiastic in playing to popular prejudice, they may look at another long-standing evil which has been both unrecognised and uncondemned for centuries.
